By the end of 2009, Dawes’‘First Life’had once again spiraled into crisis following the death of her close friend and confidante, Margot Dalglish. Her response was to self-isolate and to submerge herself within dark drama, allowing each aspect of her personal grief and unhappiness to play out within her work. The result was a series of hard hitting, tragic vignettes that follow three extraordinary Working Girlz as they compete and excel within a man’s world. In so doing she was finally able to reveal herself, both to and through Margot, and so say goodbye. Working Girlz is a lavish celebration of women like Margot, who revel in behaving extraordinarily badly. .
- The Lady Driver was conceived following a conversation in a bar when one of my female students confided to having had sex with a cab driver, in lieu of paying the fare. I was deeply affected by the casual reaction of the other girls, the matter of fact nature of the encounter and the predatory persona it created in my mind of the sinister taxi driver. It invited a reversal. Would a woman have behaved in the same manner if the roles had been reversed?
The lady Driver is a short story about the intoxication of sexual power when wielded by a determined woman. Sara is an angry lady, some say a man hater, working the night shift in her cab... You need big balls to survive out there... Picking up drunken guys as they try to steal their way home. A girl could get really mad with those college boyz.
- So, the Governor charts seven days in the life of a female state governor, whose world unravels when her wayward son-in-law decides to bare all for a woman’s glamour magazine. Sara la Penn is wealthy, powerful and privileged, a formidable tour de force who combines the roles of vivacious wife and hyper-driven politician with finesse and an unstoppable joie de vivre. I wanted to contrast her lifestyle with that of my ‘Lady-Driver’ which I was writing at the same time, whilst demonstrating that beneath the trappings of privilege, common tragic undertones exist.
It’s about the success ambivalence that confronts any woman as they fight to protect their credibility whilst holding together a family and being able to to express themselves as a sexual being. The constant threat of ruin. Something very close to my heart.
The third and final ‘Working Girlz’ drama is autobiographical, it completes the loop, gives penance for my sins, it pays the ferryman. Okay, so I’m a tease but I wanted to weave together some of the threads I’d placed within previous works about the Alania persona. It retells the story of me ahem - subpoenaed to New York, to answer accusations related to Templar connections. In particular, what role had I played the previous summer, in the chaotic events that led to the disappearance of a number of key associates, as documented within Non Nobis Domine?
Everything is here, my life stripped bare for those with the patience and wit to perceive it. To experience and finally to recognise - my journey. Under the intense scrutiny of a determined forensic psychologist the real ALANIA DAWES is revealed and finally bids farewell to this mortal coil…… This life of INFAMY.
